Advanced driving was formed on the 26th November 1957 at Glenisla Gardens, Edinburgh, as South-East of Scotland Group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists being an affiliated group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) which was only formed one year earlier in 1956.
The AGM in March 1965 a new name was agreed by the attending member as The South-East Scotland Group of Advanced Motorists which remained until the AGM of March 1973 where the Name Edinburgh & District Group of Advanced Motorist name was adopted and going on to become an independent charity under the Scottish Charity Regulator SC022550 to which it still holds.
As a volunteer group we are fully committed to Road Safety which is run entirely by volunteers offering mentoring, support and advice to anyone who wants to improve their driving skills, with up to 12 Observed runs on a one to one basis, to help you learn the system of car control, IPSGA, and where you will remain with the same Observer throughout your journey and on to taking the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driving Test.
The Group work closely with IAM RoadSmart to ensure that a national standard is maintained.

Leaving a legacy to Edinburgh Institute of Advanced Motorists is a profound way to ensure that future generations travel on safer, smarter, and kinder roads. Your foresight today can prevent the tragedies of tomorrow.
By including a gift in your will, you empower us to fund life-saving driver education, advocate for better infrastructure, and support those affected by road trauma.
It is a powerful commitment to the belief that no one should lose their life simply by trying to get home.
Your legacy ensures that your passion for safe motoring continues to protect lives long into the future.
If you want to leave us a gift in your Will, you can leave any amount – either a specific sum or a percentage.
You can state in your Will if you would like your gift to be used for a specific purpose – perhaps to fund advanced driving courses for young drivers, and there is no need for you to tell us about your plans.
If you have already made a Will
A solicitor will be able to advise you on how to add Edinburgh Institute of Advanced Motorists as a beneficiary to your Will. They may use a codicil, which is a legal document that is used to make changes or alterations to an existing Will.
